Ewell Labry

Kaplan—Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 30, 2013 at an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Ewell LaBry, 95, who died peacefully Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Courtyard Manor. He will be laid to rest at Kaplan Cemetery with Reverend Cedric Sonnier officiating the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Randall LaBry, Steven LaBry, Wayne "T-Black" Hargrave, Gilbert B. Smith, Tommy Hebert, and Wayne "CoCo" Hargrave Jr. Honorary pallbearer will be John LaBry.

Ewell was a resident of Kaplan most of his life and graduated from Kaplan High School. He was a sergeant in the United States Army and served in WWII and the Korean conflict. Mr. LaBry was known to be a gifted artist and sign painter. He was interested in baseball from a very early age, playing on his dad's team, school teams, Kaplan teams, the Semi-Pro Teche League and Army League. In later years he especially enjoyed the Braves, even creating a seven-foot model of Turner Field. Also among his interests were photography, dancing, building, and fixing things. He was faithful as a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator, and also was a member of the American Legion. As an avid researcher of history and genealogy, Ewell's culminating achievement and legacy to his family and community is his book, The History of Cossinade.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ella Mae LeLeux LaBry of Lafayette; two sons, Randall LaBry of Lafayette, Steven LaBry and his wife, Ellen of Lafayette; four daughters, Donella and her husband, Wayne "T-Black" Hargrave of Nunez, Adrianne and her husband, Gilbert Smith of Lafayette, Nadine and her boyfriend, Tommy Hebert of Lafayette, and Gayla and her husband, Mike Young of Venlo, The Netherlands; ten grandchildren, Coryne LaBry, Steven Johnathon LaBry and his fiancée, Melissa Betts, Keisa Sagrera and her husband, Nicholas Arceneaux, Christon LaBry and her husband, Christopher Saik, Alyce LaBry, Neysha Perry and her fiancé, Howie Wells, Maegan Smith, Theresa Smith, Wayne "CoCo" Hargrave Jr. and his girlfriend, Parrish Broussard, and Gilbert "Riley" Smith; two great grandchildren, Marcus Arceneaux and Genevieve Arceneaux.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean LaBry and the former Angelle Girouard; his stepmother, the former Carmelite Pellerin; and one daughter, Angela Marie LaBry.

In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to Hospice of Acadiana or Maltrait Memorial School.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Friday, November 29, 2013 from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 6 p.m.; Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 8 a.m. until services.
