Ruth Zulma B. Broussard

February 17, 1918 — May 12, 2014

ABBEVILLE—Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 17, 2014 at a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Ruth Zulma B. Broussard, 96, who died Monday, May 12, 2014 at her home.

She will be laid to rest at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery with Reverend William Blanda officiating the services.


Ruth was born in Kaplan to Rene' and Mercedes Shaw Broussard on February 17, 1918.

Ruth loved her Lord, her family, friends, country, state and church. She was recognized as a "Living Legend" for sharing her knowledge and collection of Acadian history. She was always proud of her roots and heritage.
Ruth retired as a lower elementary school teacher. Her pupils will attest that she always stressed the Golden Rule…"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Trahan and husband, Jabian "Jay" Trahan; son, Eric Bernard Broussard and wife, Pamela Broussard; five grandchildren, Kevin Trahan and wife Leah, David Trahan and wife Ellen, Leslie B. Theriot and husband Rene, Layne B. Johnson and husband Jonathan, and Travis Broussard and wife Shannon; and twelve great grandchildren, Bryan Broussard, Laken Trahan, Andrew Primeaux, Avery Theriot, Jacob Theriot, Corey Trahan, Kaylee Trahan, Alex Theriot, Anthony Broussard, Zachary Broussard, Alayna Johnson and Andy Johnson; sister-in-law, Marguerite H. Broussard; nieces; nephews; great nieces; great nephews; cousins; and godchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Justin John Broussard, Sr.; son, Justin "Jay" John Broussard, Jr.; parents, Rene Broussard and the former Mercedes Shaw; brothers, Andrew Broussard and Floyd "Ken" Broussard; sister, Florence B. Bordelon; grandson, Anthony H. Peak; and great granddaughter, Lauren Trahan.

The family appreciates all those that gave comfort and support in Ruth's last months including friends, the staff of Hospice, and caregivers Ellen, Jennifer and their helpers.
