Abbeville—Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Dr. Walter Joseph Primeaux, Jr., 86, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 2:30 a.m.
He will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Reverend Louis Richard officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Steve Lazarus, Paul Primeaux, Mark Primeaux, Trey Melancon, Willis Melancon, and Craig Melancon. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Weber and Sam DeKeyzer.
A resident of Abbeville, Walter was born on March 3, 1928 in Port Arthur, TX. He was a devout Catholic who volunteered as an Usher and was a member of the Serra Club.
Throughout his life, Walter was an avid reader and world traveler. He served in the Navy, stationed in China toward the end of WWII. He began his career as an accountant and returned to college to earn a PhD in Business Management in 1967 from the University of Houston. He worked as a Professor of Economics for twenty years and was passionate about his research and writing. Walter was proud of his contributions to his profession. Throughout his career, he authored five textbooks and monographs and seventy articles and book chapters. Walter retired from the University of Illinois as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 1988 and returned to live in Abbeville.
Walter’s family will remember him as generous, loyal and honorable. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Natalie Ardoin Primeaux; one son, Lawrence (Lisa) Primeaux of Meridian, MS; six daughters, Claire Primeaux of New Iberia, Marlene (James) Henderson of Oxford, MS, Marie (Willis) Melancon of Meridian, MS, Joan Primeaux of Lafayette, Catherine (Craig) Melancon of Marion, MS, and Michelle (Steve) Lazarus of Upper Saddle River, NJ; daugther-in-law, Nancy Stanton of Petersburg, VA; grandchildren, Aimee, Paul and Mark Primeaux, Trey and Claire Melancon, Sara Miller, Cameron and Caroline Melancon, Delaney Primeaux, and Sharon Lazarus; great grandchildren, Nola and Baxter Dunnaway; two sisters, Elaine Mouledous and Julie Hebert; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, David Primeaux; son-in-law, James Henderson; granddaughter, Shannon Meek; sister, Janice Breaux; and parents, Walter and Nola Primeaux.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday January 7, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. when the procession will depart for the church.
