Kaplan—With heavy hearts, we’d like to announce the passing of Earl “Pudgy” Turnage, Jr. at 61 years old. He went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 17, 2015. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan. He will be laid to rest at Cossinade Cemetery with Reverend Ted Broussard and Reverend Farley Painter officiating the services. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Braxton Turnage, Drew Turnage, Jarod Greene, Earl Binnings, David Richard, and Eddie Ashley.
Pudgy was the owner and NRA certified instructor of Freedom Firearms Training facility. He served as a member of the Vermilion Parish Sherrif’s Department, a member of the Abbeville Police Department as a resource officer. He served our state as a sergeant in Louisiana State Police from 1978 to 2003. Retiring with 25 years he participated in the SWAT team, road patrol, and at the Louisiana State Police Academy. He was a member of the Free Mason Society. Pudgy was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the Navy from 1972 to 1976 as a search and rescue diver. He received his 3rd degree black belt in Shotokan while serving in Japan. He was a 1971 graduate of Kaplan High School.
Pudgy enjoyed working out, hunting, shooting and spending time with his family. He loved sharing his knowledge of guns and fitness with anyone interested. He taught countless students through his karate school over decades. His greatest joy in life was playing with his grandchildren who affectionately loved “Papop”. He was loved by many and respected by all.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sheryl Turnage of Kaplan; one daughter, Katie and her husband, Jarod Greene of Cossinade; two sons, Dr. Braxton Turnage and his wife, Dr. Julie of Maroochydore, AU and Drew Turnage and his wife, Mia of Cossinade; his mother, Marian S. Turnage of Kaplan; two sisters, Virginia Turnage of Lafayette and Anne T. LeBlanc of Pflugerville, TX; three grandchildren, Lillian Greene, Avery Greene, and Rage Turnage; and his godchildren, Julie Martin and Peyton Breedlove.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Edward Turnage, Sr.; and his brother, Edward Braxton Turnage.
In lieu of flowers the family requests American flags or donations made in his honor to the Louisiana State Trooper Associate at 8120 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 70809 or NRA at 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, January 21, 2015 from 8 a.m. until services
