Roy Bertrand, Sr.

April 6, 1930 — March 26, 2015

Abbeville- Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 30, 2015, to celebrate the abundant life of Roy Bertrand, Sr. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church at 11:00am. On Thursday, March 26, 2015, surrounded by his beloved wife and family, he peacefully left his earthly home for his eternal home.

He will be laid to rest at St. Paul cemetery with Fr. Neil Pettit officiating the services. Pall bearers will be his grandsons. Lectors and gift bearers will be his granddaughters.
Mr. Roy has been an inspiring witness of faith and determination throughout his life to all who knew and loved him. The greatest testament to his unfailing strength was most apparent during his recent battle with cancer.

His strong work ethic was evident throughout his adult life as a pipe-fitter with Gulf Oil Refinery, owner of Bertrand’s Plumbing & Heating and as an instructor of Building Trades at Gulf Area Vocational & Technical School. He served Vermilion Parish as a commissioner on the Drainage Board for 24 years, 13 of those years as president.

He was devoutly committed to his church, his family, Mt. Carmel, Vermilion Catholic and his community. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, Legions of Mary and Knights of Columbus. He was proud
of having provided his 7 children with a Catholic education. His legacy of the value of Catholic education continues through the next generations with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Roy was best known for his labor of love – cooking. He used this gift to promote what was closest to his heart. He will always be remembered for the “original May Fest burgers”, VC Booster Bar-b-que rice dressing, homemade tarts and fig cake.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lenora Simon Bertrand and their seven children: Sue and husband Russell Sellers, Debbie and husband Bobby Goodrich, Roy, Jr. (Bert) and wife Jodie, Gwen and husband Dr. David Trahan, Rachel Nugent, Beth Simon, Scott and wife Karen. His eighteen grandchildren include: Christopher LaLande, Ryan Guidry, Regan Faulk, Roy Bertrand, III (Tre), Kelly Bertrand, Erin Hebert, Taylor Trahan, Courtney Trahan, Jansen Trahan, Kale Wildbur, Hanna Wildbur, Brennan Nugent, Quinn Nugent, Matt Nugent, Kalyn Simon, Chance Trojanowski, Hunter Bertrand and Alexis Bertrand. He was also blessed with fourteen great-grandchildren and 2 on the way. Also left to cherish his memory are his brother, Otto Bertrand and wife Neila, and sister Elda (June) Neveaux.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Semar Bertrand and Lezeda Trahan Bertrand, brother, Walter Bertrand, Sr. and sister Hilda Bertrand Labry and great- granddaughter Nora Jo Faulk.

His family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home in Abbeville on Sunday, March 29, 2015 from 1:00pm to 8:00pm. A Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed at 3:00pm and a rosary recited at 6:00pm. Visitation resumes Monday, March 30, 2015 at 8:00am until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that donations be sent to Vermilion Catholic High School, 425 Park Ave., Abbeville, LA 70510 in memory of Roy Bertrand, Sr.
