Sterling "Cap" Menard

March 24, 1927 — May 2, 2015

Abbeville—Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at a 1:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Sterling Louis Menard, 88, who died Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.


He will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Father Neil Pettit officiating the services.


Pallbearers will be Bobby Dartez, Raymond Steiner, Mickey Viator, Tommy Picard, Joe Cormier and Cordell Theriot. Honorary pallbearer will be C. J. Bertrand.


Mr. Menard touched the lives of many students as a high school math teacher at Erath High School, where he was known as a firm but fair teacher. He then became assistant principal at Erath Elementary. After his retirement from the school system he went on to work at the Bank of Erath.


He was an avid sports fan that loved to watch the New Orleans Saints and the Houston Astros. He enjoyed playing cards and loved a good game of Bourree.


He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Hazel Menard; and a sister, Irene Huval.


He was preceded in death by his sons, Roddy G. Menard and Brett James Menard; parents, Ulysse Menard and the former Elodia Brasseaux; three brothers, L.J. "Sug" Menard, Dalton "Shame" Menard and U.E. "Friz" Menard; and two sisters, Dorothy "Shine" Theriot and Willie Mae Menard.


The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.; Wednesday May 6, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. when the procession will depart for the church.
