Abbeville—Funeral services will be held Monday, May 18, 2015 at a 1:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church honoring the life of Zula Mae Dartez Reaux, 98, who died peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family Wednesday, May 13, 2015.

She will be laid to rest at Leroy Community Cemetery with Rev. Johnathan Janise officiating the services.

Zula was born in Leroy, Louisiana on January 15, 1917, the firstborn child of Abel and Editha Dartez. She was a 1935 graduate of Indian Bayou High School where she was an outstanding student and basketball player. She was briefly employed in Abbeville as a department store salesclerk before marrying A. J. (Baba) Reaux in 1937 and beginning her life journey of hard work. In her eyes, work and joy were synonymous. All projects, large or small, were approached with both energy and enthusiasm and she worked vigorously to insure that the results were perfect. She was especially successful at cooking, sewing, crocheting and knitting, gardening and general care-giving. Throughout her lifetime, she remained committed to using all of her God-given talents to becoming a better wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, sister and friend. With each beautiful project completed, with every delicious meal prepared or brownie batch delivered, and with every abundant produce harvest shared, she became the MASTERPIECE that so many loved and admired. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Zula is survived by her only child, Jan Reaux-Druilhet (Alfred) of Lafayette, LA; one granddaughter, Michelle Spangler (Leigh) of Dallas, TX; three grandsons, Chad Hanks (Leslie Ann), Troy Hanks (Lesli) of Lafayette, LA, and Jarrod Hanks (Heather) of Clermont, FL; twelve great grandchildren; five great-great grandsons; one sister, Lelia Dartez Patin; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, A.J. (Baba) Reaux; one grandson, Mark Hanks (Pam); one great-granddaughter, Paige Baxley; three brothers, Perry, Randol and Wilma Paul Dartez; and her parents.

Her family would like to thank the caregivers of Heart of Hospice for their compassionate care. Please remember them with any memorial contribution in Zula's name.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Sunday, May 17, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m., followed by a memorial tribute by her granddaughter; Monday, May 18, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. when the procession will depart for the church.
