Kaplan—Funeral services will be held Monday, September 7, 2015 at a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Roland Allen Gary, 93, who died Monday, August 31, 2015 peacefully at his home. He will be laid to rest at Kaplan Cemetery with Reverend Clint Trahan officiating the services.
Roland was born in New Iberia on September 4, 1921 to Margret Leblanc and Sidney Gary. He married Wanda Louise Mouton and they had two sons, Dexter and Brent. He and his family resided in Kaplan for many years where he was a horseman and cattleman, as well as a farm implement dealer. He served his civic duty as a Kaplan council member and sat on numerous boards.
Our nation has lost one of its brave soldiers and another of the few WWII veterans that remain of our “greatest generation.” Roland was a member of the Blackhawk Division, which was the only army division to cover both the European and Pacific Island Theaters. He was a man of integrity and honor and a consummate officer and gentleman. Many referred to him as a gentle giant because of his stature and the size of his heart. He was kind to everyone he met. Our family has truly lost another of its beloved members and heroes. Roland was a cherished father, grandfather and great grandfather. The grand kids called him “Pops”. As children, he lovingly sang silly songs while riding them on his knee. Pops enjoyed making them “Cous Cous” and biscuits for breakfast. As they grew he taught them to saddle and ride horses, to fish, and play “bataille”. As adults, Pops became their friend and a pleasant companion who always had a witty sense of humor and a good story to share. He was a generous man, who exemplified fairness, the importance of keeping your word, and simply doing the right thing.
He is survived by his siblings, James, Faye, Terry, Rene and Tim Gary and their families; his youngest son, Paul Brent Gary, who lovingly cared for him, and Brent’s wife, Liz; his five grandchildren and their spouses, Angela and Mickey Guidry, Dexter and Roslyn Gary, Roland and Jenny Gary, Eric and Lindsey Gary, Annie Gary, and Mitchell McDowell; and his 16 great grandchildren. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother Elwood Gary; his beloved wife of 57 years, Wanda who died in 1996; his eldest son, Dr. Dexter A. Gary and his wife, Sandra who both passed away just weeks ago.
The family would like to thank the Pointe Coupee Home Health Care, Blake Kimble, and Ethel Fredricks for their kindness and assistance.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 600 N. Church Avenue, on Monday, September 7, 2015 from 9 a.m. until services.
