Gueydan—Funeral services will be held Friday, September 4, 2015 at a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Bertha "Birdie" L. Istre, 63, who returned to the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at her residence. She will be laid to rest at Gueydan Cemetery with Reverend Corey Campeaux officiating the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Brandon Badon, Bubba LeMaire, Reed LeMaire, Blake Freeland, Tyler Abshire, and David Hardee. Honorary pallbearers will be Aaron LeMaire, Neil Lege, and Boo Istre.
Bertha was affectionately known as “Birdie” to family and friends. She loved being outdoors, fishing, spending time at her camp in Toledo Bend, listening to French music, and took great pride in her garden, which she had for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Billy Istre of Gueydan; one daughter, Tammy Broussard of Gueydan; one son, Blake Istre of Gueydan; her granddaughter, Amelia whom she loved the most; and four sisters, Laura and her husband, Lee Breaux of Morse, Thelma Clement of Morse, Hilda Richard of Morse, and Dolores and her husband, Joey Davidson of Topsy.
She was preceded in death by her previous husband, Richard Broussard; her parents, Neelis and Margaret Lege; two brothers, Irving Lege and Ronnie Lege; three brothers-in-law, Calvin Clement, Earl Richard, and Jimmy LeMaire; one aunt, Palymra Lege; and her sister, Helen Clement.
The family would like to send a special thanks to Dr. Dale Leleux, Dr. Ben Sabbaghian, Dr. Karen Roden, Dr. Carl Richard, Lamm Family Care Hospice, Acadia General Hospital; her caregivers, Barbara Clement, Donna Kibodeaux, and Beatrice Broussard; and her closest friends who stayed by her side, Cheryl Thackston, Aline Hayes; Betty Smith, Elwanda Melancon, Irene Guidry, and Donna Vice.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Gueydan, 311 Fourth Street, on Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 7 p.m.; Friday, September 4, 2015 from 8 a.m. until services.
