Lucille was born in Grosse Isle, La. on February 2, 1918 and later moved to Abbeville, La. where she lived her remainder of her life. She and her husband, the late Louis W. Bernard, worked many years at Western Auto prior to owning and operating Bernard Furniture Store.
Lucille was devoted wife, mentor, and someone who was always there for anyone who needed help. To all who knew her, she will be remembered for her generosity, kindness, compassion, and strength of character. She and her husband had no children, but she was the much loved aunt to her nieces and nephews who affectionately called her “Aunt Teel" or "Nanny".
Her great joy and love were the family gatherings.
Of the upmost importance was her Catholic faith. She was a dedicated member of St. Theresa Catholic Church and devoted much of her time to various ministries of the church. She participated in daily mass until a few years ago. Lucille was a Eucharistic and Homebound Minister for 40 years, Altar Society Member (past president), Trustee, helped count the Church offerings, and taught CCD until she was 80 years old. Also, she prepared the altar and rang church bells for funeral masses for many years. Lucille was also a Lay Carmelite Member and member of the American Legion Auxiliary at one time serving as president.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Cecile M. Mayard and Nola B. Meyers; nieces and nephews, Dorothy T. Greene, Randy Delcambre, Raleigh Mayard, Diana M. Vincent, Janel M. Clark, Florine M. Veazey, Wal'Dean S. Lundquist, Claire S. Motty, Tracey S. Howard, Linda M. Trahan, Kern Meyers, Glenda Faye Bernard Mitchell, Mark Bernard, Rex Bernard and Daniel Broussard.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis W. Bernard; parents, Olivier Mayard and Marie Aurore Richard Mayard, sisters, Margaret M. Trahan, Louella M. Delcambre and Vernon Sellers; brothers, Ira Olivier Mayard, Curtis Joseph Meyers and Natley Joseph Mayard; three nephews, Rudy Delcambre, Kenneth Delcambre and Kendall Ray Bernard.
