Abbeville—Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 21, 2015 at a 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Church honoring the life of Lucille Sherman Guidry, 94, who died Thursday, November 19, 2015 at Maison De Lafayette Nursing Home in Lafayette.
She will be laid to rest at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery in Abbeville, LA with Rev. Brian Harringon officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Deeke Guidry, Brent Johnson, Casey White, Mike Sakach and Glynn Comeaux and Tylar Clayton Clark. Honorary pallbearers will be Raywood Mailhes and Nathan Guillory.
Mrs. Guidry was born in Vermilion Parish, LA and spent the majority of her life there. She served as a private nurse to the infirmed. She became an accomplished Hybridizer and a life member of the American Hemerocallis Society having won numerous awards for some of the Cultivars she introduced in her earlier efforts in that society. Mrs. Guidry and her husband, Gabriel opened Guidry's Daylily Garden in Abbeville, LA in the 1960's and had visitors from around the world. Her achievements for adding substance to Daylilies was being recognized around the globe, her knack for nursing things to health showed up in her Cultivars as well.
In the late 1990's, Mrs. Guidry closed her Garden permanently and retired. She moved in with her son and daughter-in-law in Lafayette, LA then moved to Maison De Lafayette Nursing Home in April of 2013.
She is survived by one son, Davis Guidry and his wife Linda B. Guidry of Lafayette, LA; three grandchildren, Deeke Guidry of Lafayette, LA, Brandy White of Katie, TX, and Brent Johnson of Houston, TX; and one great grandchild, Crystal Lynn White of Katie, TX.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gabriel Guidry; daughter, Janet Gayle Sakach; parents, Joseph Sherman and Euzide Menard Sherman of Perry, LA; sisters, Elodie Brasseaux, Edith Sherman, Margaret Guillory, and Irene Comeaux; brothers, Opha Sherman, Francis Sherman, West Sherman, and Ophelias Sherman.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Friday, November 20, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, November 21, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. when the procession will depart for the church.
Her family would like to thank all of the staff of Maison De Lafayette Nursing Home for taking such good care of Mrs. Lucille during her last years, to the staff of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, and to Dr. Vincent, who looked after her during her last days.
