He attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama where he received his Bachelor’s in English in 1964. He received his Master’s degree from The University of Notre Dame in 1966 and then continued his studies at Louisiana State University where he earned his Ph.D. in 1978.

He began teaching Freshman Composition in 1979 at Louisiana State University in Eunice where he spent the remainder of his career until he retired in 1998. He was beloved by his many students and colleagues. His former students would often return to visit him on campus or meet him for lunch at LaFonda, his favorite restaurant in Lafayette.

David was a voracious reader. He loved books and enjoyed sharing them with friends and family. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed frequent trips to the gun range. He loved field and duck hunting, fishing, golf, and a good Old Fashion in the evening. He had a wonderful sense of humor which could often be seen as he jokingly reminded his friends and family that he was to be referred to as “Dr. Moreland.”

David was a devout Catholic and dedicated member of St. Mary Magdalen Parish.

David is survived by his brother, Bryce Fleming Moreland of Baton Rouge; his sister, Corinne Elise Fontana of Abbeville; six nieces and nephews; and nine great-nieces and nephews. He was loved and will be missed.
