Abbeville

Doris Fontenot, 85, of Abbeville, Louisiana, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 10, 2026. Though born in Kaplan, Doris built a beautiful life and raised his family in Cow Island, Louisiana, a place he loved deeply and proudly called home.

Doris served his country in the United States Air Force before beginning a career in the oil field, where he worked hard to provide for his family throughout the years. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Laura Mae Fontenot, and a loving father and grandfather whose kindness and steady presence meant so much to those who knew him.

He is survived by his son, David Fontenot; granddaughter, Chloe Fontenot; brother, Odeon (Junior) Fontenot and wife, Lona Fontenot; along with numerous nieces and nephews who will forever cherish the love, wisdom, and memories he gave them.

Doris was known for his caring heart and his ability to make everyone around him feel welcomed and loved. He found joy in life's simple things, especially tending to his acreage filled with pastures and gardens, which became some of the most beautiful and admired in Cow Island. He had a special love for animals and cared for everything from chickens, ducks, rabbits, pigeons, pigs, lambs, and cows to the local raccoons he faithfully fed so often that they eventually began knocking on his back door waiting for another meal.

Above all else, Doris will be remembered for his gentle spirit, generous heart, and the love he gave so freely to his family, friends, and neighbors. His memory will live on in the lives he touched, and the countless beautiful moments shared with him over the years.

A celebration of life honoring Doris will be held at a later date and announced by the family.
