ABBEVILLE- A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at St. James Catholic Church in Esther honoring the life of Evangeline Saltzman Bernard, 93, who passed away on April 23, 2025, at Abbeville General Hospital. Rev. Emmanuel “Manny” Fernandez will officiate at the funeral mass. Burial will follow at Esther Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jace Hargrave, Kyle Hargrave, Mason Hargrave, Johnny Choate, Kasey Lege and Harold Marceaux. Honorary Pallbearers will be Slaton Meador and Tadeo Velaquez-White.

A visitation will take place at Vincent Funeral Home of Abbeville, 209 S. Saint Charles St., on Monday, April 28, 2025, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a rosary to be prayed at 6:30 PM; Tuesday, April 29, 2025, from 8:00 AM until 9:30 AM when the procession will depart for the church.

Evangeline was born on January 25, 1932 in Gueydan, LA. A proud graduate of Gueydan High School, Class of 1950, Evangeline dedicated herself to her family and her faith.

Evangeline was known for her talent in sewing, particularly in creating beautiful baptismal bibs for babies being baptized at St. James Catholic Church. Her craftsmanship brought joy to many families and reflected her caring nature.

She is survived by her daughters, Nadine White and Kathleen Vice; grandsons, Kyle Hargrave (Andre) and Jace Hargrave (Shelly); granddaughters, Kristin Bernard and Kady Rost; nine great grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Presley Bernard; parents, Uzabe Saltzman and the former Eve Simon; daughter, Patricia Bernard Rost; granddaughter, Zendra White-Velaquez; sister, Eunice Trahan; and brothers, Elias Saltzman, Marcel Saltzman, and Evage Saltzman
