James "Avert" Guidry

A Mass of Christian Burial officiated by Reverend Cedric Sonnier will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, May 4, 2026, at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of James "Avert" Guidry, 83, who passed away on April 30, 2026, at Kaplan Healthcare Center. He will be laid to rest at Gueydan Cemetery.

A visitation will take place at Vincent Funeral Home of Gueydan on Monday, May 04, 2026, from 9:00 AM until 12:45 PM when the procession departs for the church with a rosary being prayed at 10:30 AM.

Avert was born on November 16,1942, to Ulysse and the former Edmay Trahan. He went to school in Wright and Gueydan. On November 17, 1965, he married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Zaunbrecher. They settled in Wright and raised three children Leisa, Gary and Ashley. After working majority of his life as a rice and crawfish farmer, he went to work for the Vermilion Parish Police Jury for over 20 years. He served as the blacktop supervisor while working there. Avert will be remembered for being a hard worker, his quick wit and for making people laugh.

He is survived by his son, Gary P. Guidry of Wright; and his two daughters, Leisa Lee (Al) of Esther and Ashley C. Guidry of Wright. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Anna L. Barras (Jeb), Aaron (Jamie) Lee, and Bret Lee; five great grandchildren, John Luke, Reagan, Ryder, AJ, and Noah.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Carolyn Z. Guidry; his parents, Ulysse and Edmay T. Guidry; his brother, Paul Rodney Guidry; and his sister, Marie Authorine Guidry.

The family would like to thank the staff of Southern Grace Hospice, especially his nurses, Heidi, Reese, Lindsey, Madeline and Crystal, his CNAs, Fairlyn and Nadine, and his sitter, Susan Gibson for the compassionate care they showed Daddy.
