Kaplan— Joan Katherine Hymel (Talbot) drifted from this plane of existence into the next on the evening of September 25, 2024, after a spirited fight with thyroid cancer, and an extensive hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church. She will be laid to rest at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cemetery with Reverend Stephen Sahayaraj Irudayasamy officiating the services.
On December 18, 1955, she married the love of her life, Msgt. Clifford P. Hymel, Sr. She was his companion and partner until his passing in 2011.
Joan was a skilled gardener, who worked in her yard up until illness. She was a talented seamstress, often sewing clothing for her children when they were young. Joan was also a voracious reader until her eyes were no longer strong enough to do so. She was an equal partner to her husband through 22 years of military service, and a fierce mother and grandmother, both stern and loving. Joan played trombone in the Hahnville High School marching band and enjoyed music of all kinds. Her guilty pleasure was watching British comedies and crime dramas.
Joan is survived by three children, Clifford P. Hymel, Jr., Tina Marie Gresham, and Mary Katherine Hymel, as well as daughter-in-law, Natalie Tregre Hymel; her sister, Arlene Renoudat; brother Joseph P. Talbot; six grandchildren, Clifford P. Hymel III and wife Andrea, Amanda Gresham Wareham and husband Justin, Derek Hymel and wife Liz, David A. Gresham and wife Angela, Natasha Hymel, and Rachel Gresham and fiancé Oscar; and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney A. Talbot, Sr, and Arlette Boudreaux Talbot; and her brothers, Robert Nelson Talbot and Sidney Anthony Talbot, Jr.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Ave., on Friday, September 27, 2024 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM with a rosary being prayed at 7:00 PM; Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 8:00 AM until the services at 10:00 AM.
Joan’s family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Our Lady of Lourdes for care and treatment through her cancer, Kaplan Home Health for aftercare, and to Heart of Hospice for their compassion and care through her final days.
