In remembrance of my Uncle Chester Leblanc

Joseph Chester O’Neal Leblanc was born on March 17, 1933 to O’neal Leblanc and Elina Reaux Leblanc of the Leblanc Community.  Together they had 7 children.  One girl and 6 boys.  Uncle Chester’s father passed away in 1933 when he was a mere 6 months old.  With only a mother and six older siblings to help care for him they became a close nit family.

At the age of 20, Uncle Chester joined the Army to serve his country in the Korean War in 1953-1954 and was granted an Honorable Discharge.  He would remain an active member with the American Legion Post 338 in Delcambre, La. for over 60 years.

After his return from the Korean War, he met the love of his life Betty Lou Faulk at a dance hall called the “Belva Dear”.  They were married in 1957 in Delcambre, La. And would spend the next 45 years together.  Together they had a daughter they named Annetta better known to many of us as “Netta Faye”.  She was the light of their life and their only child. Together Annetta and her dad would care for her mom who had developed multiple sclerosis until she passed in August of 2002.

Uncle Chester loved his farm life.  Raising cattle and sheep were his passion.  Later came along peacocks, chickens, and his very own fish pond.  You could catch him on any given day riding his 4-wheeler sitting sideways along with his side kick “Rambo” sitting shotgun riding around the farm to make sure all was well on the farm.

Although Uncle Chester was a man of few words, he never met a stranger.  He was always the first to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He had a heart of gold and if you were blessed to have known him, you could say you met one of God’s angels.  He was a man of God who believed in the power of prayer and used it through his life journey here on Earth.

As I say goodbye to my last living uncle, the legacy of “The Leblanc” family lives on through us.  The memories live on in each of my cousins his nieces and nephews.  Our countless gatherings as family watching and learning what true family is.  Our yearly New Year’s day celebrations which became a ritual will never be the same again.

Rest in peace Uncle Chester—your path to heaven was carved and ready to greet you as you leave this world behind.

Til’ we meet again…
