Louis Joseph Hardy

Abbeville—A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Louis Joseph Hardy, 82, who passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Pelican Pointe Nursing Home. He will be laid to rest at Graceland Cemetery with Father Nicholas Dupre officiating the services.

In 1962, Joe began a long career as a barber in Abbeville, La, where he owned and operated Hardy’s Barber Shop for 53 years. He was known for giving many children their first haircut and loved telling jokes and stories as entertainment for his patrons.

Joe started his political career in 1976, as a Vermilion Parish Police Juror where he remained in office for 28 years. During this time, he served on multiple boards and committees including the Court House Building Committee, Public Works Committee, Finance Committee, Public Road Committee, and Animal Control. In 1985, he was elected to serve as Vice President of the Jury. In 2006, Joe was elected to serve the City of Abbeville as a City Councilman. He served as Councilman for the next 12 years and retired in 2018.

In his spare time, Joe thoroughly enjoyed hunting. He was an avid duck and goose hunter, and enjoyed spending time with his hunting buddies and grandchildren in the duck blind. He also found great pleasure in cooking for his family and friends.

He is survived by his son, Shane Hardy and his wife Derra Mayard, of Beaumont, Tx; two daughters, Tisa Hardy LoPiccolo and her husband Gary LoPiccolo, of Lafayette, and Melissa Hardy Baumbouree and her husband Dr. Derek Baumbouree, of Broussard; one brother, Leo Hardy and his wife Peggy, of Maurice; three sisters, Louella Meaux , of Kaplan, Peggy Griffen and her husband Larry, of Abbeville, and Maxine Schexnider and her husband Rainey, of Lafayette; four grandchildren, Madison Taff, Logan Bertrand, Andrew Bertrand, and Mia LoPiccolo;  one great grandchild, Avery Taff; and mother of his children, Virgie Hardy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Awill Hardy and the former Hazel Hebert; and two sisters, Delores Miller and Dorothy Miller.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles St., on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 from 9:00 AM until 1:45 PM when the procession will depart for the church. A rosary being prayed at 1:00 PM.
