It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Richard Wayne Lavergne on November 5, 2024, at the age of 65. Rick, as he was affectionately known, was born in Chicago on August 2, 1959, and raised in the Windy City before making his way to the heart of Cajun Country in Louisiana.
A proud graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Rick earned his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force. It was during his time at the university that he met the love of his life, Susan Kay Vincent of Kaplan, Louisiana. Together, they shared 43 wonderful years of marriage, and a life filled with adventure, love, and unwavering support for one another.
Rick’s service to his country spanned two decades, during which he flew multiple aircraft, including the F-5, A-10, and F-16, earning the respect and admiration of his peers as he served in various assignments. His passion for aviation and his commitment to excellence carried him through his military career, culminating in his retirement from Shaw Air Force Base. But his love of service did not end with his military career; Rick transitioned into a role as a contractor with Alion, where he served as Director of Command and Control for AFCENT.
After years of supporting our nation's defense, Rick found a new calling in teaching. He brought his expertise and dedication to Central Carolina Technical College, where he taught engineering design and technology. Rick was beloved by his students, many of whom looked up to him not only as a mentor but as a friend. His influence shaped many lives, and he continued to teach with passion and devotion until his retirement in July 2024.
Rick’s family was the center of his world. He leaves behind his cherished wife Susan, their five children — Elizabeth Fredenburg (Kevin), Christina Lavergne, Christopher Lavergne (Katie), Nicholas Lavergne, and Peter Lavergne (Faith) — and his “adopted” son Rudy Ramos (Brittany). His heart overflowed with love for his 12 grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his two brothers, Danny Lavergne and Chuck Degand (Mary), and his sister Lisa Duhon, as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Ura Lavergne, his brother James Lavergne, and his sister Cynthia Lavergne. He was a long-time member of St. Anne and St. Jude Church, where his faith and commitment to his community were unwavering.
Rick’s legacy will live on in the lives of his family, friends, students, and all who had the honor of knowing him. He was a man of integrity, a devoted father and husband, a servant to his country, and a teacher who shaped minds and hearts alike. His love, his laughter, and his wisdom will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Anne St. Jude Debt Reduction Fund, in honor of Rick’s lifelong commitment to his faith and community.
Rest in peace, Rick. Your legacy of service, love, and faith will endure forever in the hearts of all who loved you.
