Whitney was born in Abbeville and was a lifelong resident of Erath. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife and a proud father to his eight children. Family was the center of his world, and he spent his life putting the needs of his wife, children, and grandchildren above his own. He was a strong man in every sense. He was steady, determined, and deeply rooted. He passed that strength on to the generations who followed him. He taught his children, “If you dig a ditch, you dig the best darn ditch you can.”
He loved the outdoors and found peace in the simple moments, especially evenings spent on his porch watching his chickens and ducks. He loved to joke and laugh with his family, filling their lives with humor, warmth, and the kind of joy that stays with you forever. A hardworking oilfield man, Whitney took great pride in the years he spent on the rigs and never tired of sharing stories from his time in the oilfield. He had a gift for fixing things and enjoyed working with his hands, always ready to repair anything that needed attention. His presence was comforting, his work ethic unmatched, and his love for his family unwavering.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty‑two years, Dorothy Breeden Istre; his sons, Whitney Britt Istre (Jessica), Whitney Brent Istre (Susan), Bert Lee Istre (Chantel), and Brad Frederick Istre (Deborah); his daughters, Brenda (The Cat) Delcambre (Dale), Dorothy Jan Wells (R.J.), Rebecca Louise Marceaux (Todd), and his brothers; Harold John “Dago” Boudreaux, Murphy East, his sisters; Ruby East, Norma Istre and Annie Daigle. He also leaves behind twenty-seven-grandchildren, forty-eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladu Istre, Sr. and Louise Bourque Boudreaux, and stepfather, Frederick Boudreaux; his daughter, Marilyn Ann Boudreaux, his sisters, Marjorie Istre Hebert and Alice Boudreaux Clement, and his brother; Eldridge “Glen” Istre.
Whitney’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses of Heart of Hospice and caregivers, Annette Thames and Bonnie Benoit for the compassionate care they provided.
